Early Life, Family Background and Education

Sudha Murty was born on August 19, 1950, to a Kannada-speaking family in Shiggaon, Haveri, Karnataka, India, the daughter of R. H. Kulkarni, a surgeon, and his wife Vimala Kulkarni, a school teacher.
Her maternal grandparents and parents raised her. Her first significant piece, How I Taught My Grandmother to Read, Wise and Otherwise and Other Stories, is based on her early experiences.
Murty earned a BEng in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the B.V.B. College of Engineering & Technology (now known as KLE Technological University), followed by an MEng in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science.
