Shaktikanta Das has dedicated over 35 years in government services and continues to serve in the capacity of RBI Governor even after his retirement. His key role in the preparation of 8 Union Budgets since 2008 speaks of his knowledge, experience, and caliber around numbers and economy. Let’s take a look at the career journey of Shaktikanta Das:

Tamil Nadu IAS Cadre

In 1980, Shaktikanta Das became an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu Cadre. Previously, he completed a financial management course from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. Das served as the District Magistrate of Dindigul and Collector of Kancheepuram under the Tamil Nadu government. Later, he went on to become the Project Director of Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society followed by Special Revenue Commissioner and Principal Secretary for Industries.

Revenue and Economic Affairs Secretary

After NDA came to power in 2014, Das was appointed as the Revenue Secretary for one year before he became the Economic Affairs Secretary and served till the year 2017. Das had a significant role in the first NDA budget of the current tenure, design of GST law and saw through the Indian economic stability during demonetization.

Retirement

Post-retirement, Das represented India at the G20 summit, which continues to be the crowning jewel in his long list of life achievements. Shaktikanta’s retirement in May 2017 was immediately followed by his appointment in the Fifteenth Finance Commission. It was his decision to resign from the Commission’s post after being selected as the Governor of RBI.

Reserve Bank of India   

After Urjit Patel cited “personal reasons” for resignation, Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India on December 11, 2018. He holds the office for three years.

The appointment of Das was backed by largely positive opinions of his credibility, skill, and potential from leading analysts and economists of the country.
