With his unwavering dedication and unparalleled talent, Vicky has transcended the limitations of his humble beginnings, earning international acclaim for his thought-provoking images that encapsulate raw emotions and social narratives. From capturing the plight of the marginalized to celebrating the rich heritage of his beloved India, Vicky Roy has become a beacon of creativity, empathy, and artistic excellence.

A Humble Beginning: Escaping Abuse and Finding Hope

Born into a low-income family in West Bengal, Vicky Roy’s early life was marked by adversity and abuse. Fleeing from his oppressive home at the age of 11, he sought refuge in Delhi, driven by a desperate need to escape his past.

Discovering the Art: A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything

In Delhi, Vicky found himself working as a rag picker and dishwasher near the bustling New Delhi Railway Station. But destiny had something extraordinary in store for him. A compassionate doctor introduced him to the Salaam Baalak Trust, an NGO dedicated to helping homeless children. It was within the nurturing confines of this organization that Vicky’s life took an unexpected turn.

At the NGO, he crossed paths with a British photographer whose passion and talent inspired him deeply. In the midst of uncertainty and hardship, a dream took root in Vicky’s heart: to become a photographer himself. With an insatiable hunger for capturing the world around him, he embarked on a remarkable journey of self-discovery.

From Struggles to Success: Nurturing a Passion

Fueling his determination, Vicky’s enthusiasm for photography grew day by day. He tirelessly clicked photographs, immersing himself in the art form. His dedication and unwavering focus caught the attention of the NGO, which presented him with a camera as a parting gift when he turned 18. Armed with this precious tool, he set out to pursue his dreams.

Mastering the Craft: Education and Skill Development

To refine his skills further, Vicky enrolled in a Diploma in Photography at Triveni Kala Sangam in Delhi. But his thirst for knowledge knew no bounds. Determined to broaden his horizons, he seized the opportunity to attend a six-month documentary photography course at the esteemed International Centre of Photography (ICP) in New York. The exposure to different techniques and perspectives would prove invaluable on his artistic journey.

A Lens on Reality: Shedding Light on Social Issues

Vicky’s photography projects always bore a deeper purpose. He aimed to shed light on the harsh realities faced by street children, raising awareness of their plight. At just 20 years old, he held his first solo exhibition, “Street Dreams,” at the renowned India Habitat Centre. The power of his imagery captivated audiences, igniting a spark of inspiration.

Capturing Moments and Meaning: International Recognition

Vicky’s breakthrough came when he turned his lens towards the rebuilding of the World Trade Centre in New York. His photographs captured the spirit of a city in recovery, earning him international acclaim and recognition. The world took notice of his unique perspective and ability to evoke emotions through his art.

Honoring India: A Touch of Culture in Every Frame

Throughout his journey, Vicky never forgot his roots. He remained deeply committed to capturing the essence and soul of India through his photographs. He drew inspiration from the lessons imparted by the photographer he met at the NGO, who encouraged him to reflect the essence of India in his work. Vicky’s creative approach, hard work, and dedication to raising awareness have made him an inspiration to budding photographers and a respected figure among his peers.
