India’s Oldest Billionaire: Keshub Mahindra

Mr. Keshub Mahindra, popularly known as India’s most seasoned billionaire, was chairman emeritus of Mahindra & Mahindra. He was instrumental in expanding the company from an automobile manufacturer to a diversified conglomerate with a presence in multiple domains.

On 12th April 2023, Mr. Keshub Mahindra passed away at the age of 99, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled success and contributions to the Indian business landscape. During his tenure, Mahindra & Mahindra launched several innovative products, expanded into new markets, and implemented novel business strategies.

Under Mr. Mahindra’s leadership, Mahindra & Mahindra introduced several successful products, including the Scorpio SUV, the Bolero pick-up truck, and the XUV500. He also played a pivotal role in the company’s global expansion and acquisition of companies such as the Korean automaker SsangYong Motors.

Keshub Mahindra: Early Life and Career

Keshub Mahindra was born on January 9, 1924, in Lahore, which is now part of Pakistan. He grew up in a family that was involved in business and had an entrepreneurial spirit. Keshub Mahindra completed his schooling in Lahore and then went to the UK to study engineering. However, due to the outbreak of World War II, he returned to India and joined the Indian Army. After serving in the army, he joined the Mahindra & Mahindra group in 1947, which was then a small automobile manufacturing company. Keshub Mahindra started his career at the company as a trainee and worked his way up to become its chairman in 1963. His early life experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic, leadership skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset, which helped him lead Mahindra & Mahindra to become a leading conglomerate in India and the world.
