Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap

To have striven, to have made the effort, and to have been true to dedication, this alone is worth the struggle – nobody knows it better than Anurag Kashyap, who is one of the most prominent names in the Indian cinema. An Indian film director, writer, editor, producer and actor, Anurag Kashyap’s each directorial took him on a new level of success, slowly and gradually getting him the recognition he was worthy of.

Godfather for aspiring filmmakers

Although his work was never devoid of judgement, he made it a point to shun the critiques with his excellent work in every project he took. He is best known for his work in Devd, Gulaal (2009), That Girl in Yellow Boots, the two-part crime drama- Gangs of Wasseypur, and his recent Netflix Original series Sacred Games that gained him both critical, and commercial appreciation. He is also a proud recipient of the National Film Award, four Filmfare Awards, and an entitlement by the Government of France with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and letters).

Call his movies ahead of their time or that the Indian audience was not ready then, because despite so many phenomenal movies he has made for years, it isn’t until recently with the boom of OTT platforms that Anurag started gaining huge acclamation. Just like his career, his personal life was not one without struggles.

During an interview, Anurag mentioned how he was bullied back in school. “Sexual abuse is common in schools, especially in residential ones. It’s not the children’s fault, it’s the system that’s faulty, but that I realise today. Then, I was deeply affected by it,” he said.

Growing up, acting was his aspiration and therefore, he came to Mumbai in 1993 but, surviving in Mumbai alone wasn’t an easy feat. Some days, he would sleep at his friend’s place who was living with a cousin whereas other days, he would sleep in the abandoned nooks of the city. However, scriptwriting was what kept him going and sustained and today, Anurag is not just a scriptwriter but a prolific director and an actor as well. When asked what the biggest learning in his life has been, he replied that it was the conviction and taking responsibility for oneself.
