Ajay Banga: Early Life and Education

Born on 10th November 1959 in Khadki Cantonment, Pune, Maharashtra, Ajay Pal Banga hails from a family with a strong military background. His father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, is a retired Lieutenant General in the Indian Army, and Ajay’s upbringing was marked by the discipline and values of hard work instilled in him from a young age.

Ajay’s family’s frequent postings meant that he had to adapt to new environments often, attending schools in Shimla and Hyderabad before pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi and a Post Graduate Programme in Management from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad.

Throughout his early years, Ajay displayed a natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge that set him apart. However, it was his unwavering commitment to hard work, determination, and resilience that propelled him to become one of the most successful business leaders in the world.

Ajay Banga’s Illustrious Career

Ajay Pal Banga’ career began in 1981 when he joined Nestle for management training. He spent 13 years with the company in various sales, marketing, and general management roles. In 1994, he moved to PepsiCo and launched international fast-food franchises Pizza Hut and KFC during the period of economic liberalization in India.

Banga joined Citigroup in 1996 and worked in various roles before heading the bank’s Asia Pacific business in 2008. He led a major reorganization of its Asian operations, giving regional heads increased authority across the bank’s product lines. In 2010, he became the President, CEO, and a member of the Board of Directors of Mastercard. Banga has also held positions in various multinational companies such as Exor, Temasek Holdings, and BeyondNetZero. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for these companies since 2021.

In addition, he started serving as the first Vice President of the International Chamber of Commerce in 2010 and succeeded to the position of President of ICC in 2020. He announced the creation of a group of 100 firms that make corporate investments to preserve the environment, called Priceless Planet Coalition, in 2020 and pledged to plant 100 million trees. Achieving high positions in various well-known companies consistently, Ajay Banga’s net worth was touted to be 17 billion rupees in 2021.

Ajay Banga has achieved success in both the public and private sectors. He served on the President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations under President Barack Obama and advised Vice President Kamala Harris as Chairman of the Partnership for Central America. Currently, he is the 14th President of the World Bank and a frequent keynote speaker at various conferences. He also delivered a convocation speech at his alma mater in 2015.
