Born on 10th November 1959 in Khadki Cantonment, Pune, Maharashtra, Ajay Pal Banga hails from a family with a strong military background. His father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, is a retired Lieutenant General in the Indian Army, and Ajay’s upbringing was marked by the discipline and values of hard work instilled in him from a young age.

Banga joined Citigroup in 1996 and worked in various roles before heading the bank’s Asia Pacific business in 2008. He led a major reorganization of its Asian operations, giving regional heads increased authority across the bank’s product lines. In 2010, he became the President, CEO, and a member of the Board of Directors of Mastercard. Banga has also held positions in various multinational companies such as Exor, Temasek Holdings, and BeyondNetZero. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for these companies since 2021.

In addition, he started serving as the first Vice President of the International Chamber of Commerce in 2010 and succeeded to the position of President of ICC in 2020. He announced the creation of a group of 100 firms that make corporate investments to preserve the environment, called Priceless Planet Coalition, in 2020 and pledged to plant 100 million trees.
